Democratic elections are still some way away, there’s serious unrest in several cities and today a United Nations report reveal that up to 8,000 pro-Gaddafi supporters were being held by militia groups in Libya.
Human Rights Commissioner Navi Pillay claimed they are being held in appalling conditions and are being abused and tortured.
While Amnesty International state that detainees have died after being tortured by militias in detention centres.
The organisation’s medical staff said they were were being asked to patch up detainees mid-way through torture sessions so they could go back for more abuse.
The agency said it was in Misrata, about 130 miles east of the Libyan capital and scene of some of the fiercest battles in the conflict, to treat war-wounded detainees but was instead having to treat fresh wounds.
Meantime, the UN’s Mrs Pillay said the problem was down to militias working outside of government control.
She added: ‘The lack of oversight by the central authorities creates an environment conducive to torture and ill treatment. My staff have received alarming reports that this is happening in places of detention that they have visited.’

General Director of MSF Christopher Stokes reinforced the UN assertions and said: ‘Patients were brought to us in the middle of interrogation for medical care, in order to make them fit for more interrogation.

The agency said it has raised the issue with the authorities in Misrata and with the national army.

The new round of sanctions will not stop Iran’s pursuit of a nuclear weapon, said Israel’s Defense Minister Ehud Barak in a radio interview Tuesday, Jan. 24, stressing that Israel’s hand was always near the trigger. His comments aimed at cooling the optimistic notes emanating from Washington, Europe and some Israeli circles Monday after the European Union foreign ministers approved an oil embargo against Iran from July 1 and froze its central bank’s assets. The US then applied sanctions to Iran’s third biggest bank, Bank Tejerat.
Barak said that because Iran had not stopped developing a nuclear weapon Israel had not removed any options from the table. We say this “very seriously,” he stressed.
Monday, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu greeted the European sanctions by saying that they were positive but would not stop or interrupt Iran’s drive for a nuclear weapon.
The defense minister agreed that the Europeans had started out in the right direction. But he saw no reason to hold off until July before the oil embargo went into effect or to delay a boycott on transactions by Iran’s central bank. Oil shortfalls can be made up within weeks, Barak pointed out, from Saudi Arabia’s huge reserves, from the oil produced by Libya and from expanded Iraqi production.
debkafile’s sources report that, seen from Israel, Obama administration and the European Union are holding sanctions off until summer to give US, European and Iranian back-channel emissaries using Turkey’s good offices enough space to get nuclear negotiations resumed.

In another part of his interview, the Israeli defense minister said Iran had climbed down over its first threat to shut the Strait of Hormuz to US aircraft carriers. Heeding the US pledge to use its might to guarantee free passage through the strait, Tehran let the USS Abraham Lincoln escorted by British and French warships pass through Jan. 22 without incident.

In a way this insight was not so difficult. But nobody else I could see spelt it out. I thought that the Jews if they wanted to go on living had no choice. This was based on reading the statements and jibes against Israel coming non-stop from Iran, calling Jews a cancerous growth on society and so on. Where did we hear that before? From the Nazis of course.
There was another source for me being convinced that Netanyahu not only had to act but woluld act. I read an interview which Netanyahu gave to American and Canadian bloggers maybe now several years ago. One was Pamela Geller, another was Omri Coren with whom I had terrible differences over the withdrawal from Gaza. I was very impressed with what Netanyahu was saying in this short interview. he had one thing on his mind…Iran. He also was repeating continually that everything depended on the ordinary people of America. he did not exactly use those words “ordinary people of America” but believe me that was the essence. In other words Netanyahu knew or sensed very well that the US Imperialist elite would always be looking after THEIR interests. You could see his crisis. He and the Jews could not defend on the US meaning the US elite.
I have been terribly disappointed in many things about Netanyahu but I have never really forsaken that initial thought, that Netanyahu would save Israel from the Iranian Nuclear Bomb.
More recently, in fact very recently, there is a new factor in that Newt Gingrich has stated AND BACKED IT UP that the Palestinians so-called are a false flag operation, they are set up by antisemitism to destroy the Jews. They have no historical validity. they require a complete revision of not only written history but even archaeology. They require especially the writing out of history of Hajj Amin el Husseini, really in every sense the originator of the “Palestinians”. Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu advised visiting Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Martin Dempsey Friday, Jan.20 that the time for action against Iran was now, for two reasons: First, the conviction that Iran has passed the point of no return for developing a nuclear weapon; and second, the diminishing prospects for a US-led embargo on Iranian oil to catch on before it is too late.
The Obama administration disputes the Israeli prime minister on both points, insisting there is still time for tough sanctions to incapacitate the Iranian economy and stop Tehran before it reaches the point of no return in its drive for a nuke. Israel insists that this pivotal point was reached four years ago in 2008.
Gen. Dempsey was exhaustively briefed on the Israeli position during his whirlwind interviews Friday with President Shimon Peres, Defense Minister Ehud Barak and three conversations with Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz, one with key General Staff officers.
It was not by chance that Maj. Gen. (ret.) Asher Yadlin, until last year Israel chief of military intelligence, maintained in a detailed article in the Tel Aviv daily Maariv: “If Iranian leaders were to convene tonight and decide to go ahead with the secret production of a nuclear bomb, they already possess the resources and components for doing so. This [capability] was once defined as the point of no return. [As matters stand] now, Iran’s nuclear timeline no longer hinges on the calendar; it rests entirely on a decision in Tehran.”
The former intelligence chief was saying that for four years, the US and Israeli governments colluded in propagating the false assumption that Iran had not reached a nuclear weapon capability. Presenting a highly problematic oil embargo in 2012 as capable of putting Iran off its nuclear stride is equally illusory.
Yadlin’s disclosure provided backing for Netanyahu who Thursday, Jan. 19, at the end of a visit to Holland, asserted for the first time: “Iran has decided to become a nuclear state” and called for “action now to stop Iran before it’s too late.”
Some of Israel’s cabinet ministers tried to soften the impact of the prime minister’s words by suggesting that his bluntness aimed at pushing President Barack Obama into implementing the sanctions he signed into law on Dec. 30 targeting Iran’s central bank and oil sales, and giving him an extra lever for bringing the European Union and Asian powers aboard.
But Netanyahu soon put them right. According to debkafile’s Jerusalem sources, he lined them all up to inform Gen. Dempsey – and through him President Obama – that they did not believe in those sanctions and suspected the Obama administration of orchestrating their buildup as a tool for holding Israel back from a unilateral strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities.
debkafile’s oil sources in Asia and Europe report that updated figures confirm how little traction the oil embargo campaign has achieved so far:
There is no evidence that China, Japan, South Korea, India, Turkey and the European Union members, which purchase in total 85 percent of Iran’s total average export of 2.5 million barrels a day, have cancelled any part of their orders.
While China – which in 2011 bought from Iran 550,000 barrels a day, covering 11 percent of its oil – cut its orders down in January by 285,000, this had nothing to do with an embargo. Beijing was simply exploiting the threat of an embargo to squeeze from Iran a discount on prices and reduction of its debt for previous purchases. China made it clear to the Security Council that is opposed to “sanctions, pressure and military threats” against Iran. After settling its price dispute with Tehran, China fully intends to return to its former level of trade, even if it decides to partially diversify its oil sources to Saudi Arabia following Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao’s Middle East trip this month.
The European Union, which buys some 450,000 barrels per day from Iran, holds a special meeting Monday, Jan. 23, after failing last week to approve a cutback on purchases from Iran. Iran provides Greece, Italy and Spain respectively with about 25 percent, 13 percent and 10 percent of their oil. They are holding out for a very partial embargo and want it delayed until the end of 2012.
Japan, while pledging publicly to keep reducing its purchases of Iranian crude by 100,000 barrels a day, is waiting to see whether China and India join the ban. “The United States should try and talk more with India and China as they are the biggest buyers of Iranian crude,” said Japan’s foreign minister Koichiro Gemba this week, clearly passing the buck.
South Korea is only willing to forgo 40,000 bpd, but is asking for a waiver.
India’s Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai said this week that India, which as Iran’s second biggest buyer after China relies on Iran for 12 percent of its imports (3,500,000-4,000,000 bpd), will continue to trade with Tehran and not abide by sanctions.
In anticipation of a US-led ban on Iran’s central bank, Delhi announced this week that the CBI would open an account with an Indian bank for receiving payment for its oil, partly in Indian rupees instead of US dollars.
Turkey, keen to position itself as broker between the West and Tehran and the venue for future nuclear negotiations, is maintaining its import level of 200,000 bpd of crude from Iran.
Given the snaillike progress of the international oil sanctions campaign against Iran, the Israeli Prime Minister informed Gen. Dempsey Friday that he could not see his way to giving the Obama administration more time for these penalties to work. He stressed that the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program had reached the critical point where time was of the essence for preempting a nuclear-armed Iran.

This article by Caroline Glick has got some good analysis but it is confused over vital matters. My criticism here is that the Israel leaders did not defend ben Ali, Gaghbo, mubarak, Gadhafi and others too numerous now to mention unconditionally against the Empire/Jihad.

OK it is a long time ago but the events of the 1930s were then strongly debated. Should one defend Selassie who was actually a despot who believed in slavery against the Nazis. Leon Trotsky was unhesitating in that Selassie had to be defended unconditionally.
That is actually a great precedent.
Caroline Glick in my opinion is very wrong in her treatment of these vital issues.
Contrary to what she says Israel has got a great deal to lose in this Arab nightmare.
Furthermore the issue of Syria is exactly the same as Egypt and of Libya, which in turn is largely similar to Abyssinia in the 1930s, although it is a new historical period.
Assad must be defended unconditionally against the combination of western imperialism, at the moment the Obama type, and the Jihad.
Assad strange as it is and may sound is actually fighting here against the Jihad, which is represented above all by Obama/Qatar/Al Jazeera
And so on. This is a battle for principle. These are political positions that have to be taken up and these positions of leadership have got serious repercussions.
For example if you do not defend Assad unconditionally then if he is overthown the consequences of Sharia and the massacre of Christians/Kurds etc. because of Sharia, and their total flight, will be serious. That must follow if Assad falls as did Gaghbo, Ben Ali, Gadhafi and Mubarak.
Just as with Leon Trotsky calling for unconditional defence of Selassie did not imply agreement with Selassie so the same applies here exactly. If we call for the defence of Assad in Syria against the Jihad/Imperialism/Qatar Arab League alliance it does not (neither) imply political agreement on our part with Assad and the Syrian Baathists.

Actually it was not censored by glick. It appears on her site today but there seemed to be a 24 hour at least delay. That threw me.
But all of the issues remain. The comments to the Glick article are what I would call diabolical. They are totally dangerous to the Jewish people of Israel.
All the comments are refusing to take up the defence of Assad against the Jihad/Empire charge for new ground for Islam.

That is a sentence from http://www.debka.com. the most amazing sentence. The most revealing sentence.
Look at this sentence closely because the fate of the whole world, the whole of humanity, the whole existence of ALL life including All human AND animal life on the planet hangs on understanding.
First of all it applies to Obama and Israel, but Mitt Romney is little and maybe no different than Obama. Gingrich is better because Gingrich stated that the “Palestinian thing” is a fraud. Full marks then to Gingrich. He did what NO American leader ever did before. He exposed the Hoax/Big Lie of the Palestinian Arab Muslims.
So the question from the above is:
Why would the US, Obama and Mrs Clinton, be “increasingly concerned”?
As we write the Iranian Islam fanatics are working like crazy on their centrifuges increasing their uranium from 20 to 80 per cent. They have the latest very modern machines doing this. Thousands of them. By their own statements it isa in deep secrecy INSIDE a mountain near Qom.
By April they will have sufficient to make 5 nuclear bombs.
Then a decision will be taken GO FOR IT and withing a very few weeks the bombs are made.
In the meantime they are creating a test facility underground also. That will be the announcement to the world. Then it will be too late to the world.
OBAMA IS ANTISEMITIC
Obama is a mixture of being an anti-Semitic Christian and a Muslim. He was trained as a Muslim in a Muslim school/madrassah situation. This comes out in a direct fashion in his hatred of Israel the Jewish Homeland. He denies and opposes the essence of the Jewish Homeland.
The Muslim part of Obama wants Israel cleared away (off the face of the map). The Christian part of Obama hates the Jews as do most Christians who are outside Bible Evangeliocanism and even they lay conditions on the Jews. OBAMA IS NOT SOCIALIST OR LEFTIST AS AGENTS OF IMPERIALISM ASSERT.
Obama basically hates Israel. Obama basically does not “hate” Iran and believes that as Muslims they can be talked to (that is talked sense to)
These issues means that in concrete politics Obama is on a collision course with Israel in this sense:
If the Israeli leaders are to fight for the safety of Israel they have to break with Obama and his whole team that he has built around him, many of whom ironically are “Jews”!
PURE ANTISEMITISM
Antisemitism lies at the root. Iran with the Nuclear Bomb cannot destroy the US, but Iran with the Nuclear Bomb can destroy Israel. They reckoned on this long ago, they know this, and they said this.
What Obama in that last Thursday phone call bullying of Netanyahu implied was the following:
“We America come first, always. It matters not to us Iran having the Nuclear Bomb. Anyway you Jews caused all of this as you always have and do. In the end Iran will have the Nuclear Bomb and then I will insist on you Israel and you Jews living with that reality. You live with the reality wioth a Nuclear Jihad”.
It is pure anti-Semitism on the part of Obama representing America.
Where then is the outswell of opposition from the American Christians? It is nowhere!
In fact in the whole of the world Israel is on its own and alone standing with Israel is us, 4international. We are the only socialist movement standing with Israel. This is important.
This present day world does not deserve the Jews and does not deserve Israel and very often what you do not deserve you do not get. If things continue along this path, for example if Obama and even Romney win, then there may be no more Israel and eventually no more Jews. (Gingrich has played a great role in stating the Palestinian thing is a hoax. But still he will be an unknown quantity)
The Nazi Holocaust will have been completed.
CAN ANYTHING BE DONE?
Can anything be done? The answer by Trotskyism is most definitely yes.
The place to start is that there must be a Trotskyist party.
WHY MUST THERE BE A TROTSKYIST PARTY?
Why must there be a Trotskyist Party? The answer is that the analysis of 4international is unique and unique in a vital manner.
Only the method of Trotskyism which is Marxism/Dialectical Materialism can lead. I will refer here to a few issues only which fairly shows this. I do hate that we on 4international have to draw attention to this because these are good sites and very good people to whom we are allied and whom we defend and will defend:
1. The great website against Jihadism “Jihadwatch.org” stated clearly that they had “no dog in this fight” in the battle between Mubarak and the Jihad/Empire. That abstentionism led to the fall of Mubarak and 75 election win by the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt (the Salafist Party is also MB). Mubarak may be executed by the Empire/Jiadists who control Egypt again thanks to Jihadwatch and Robert Spencer who runs it.
Pamela Geller on her equally great and vital site followed Spencer. Geller read that article and did not voice ANY opposition.
Spencer and Geller ARE the antiJihadist movement. Their position “no dog in this fight” was very common among all of the Jewish blogs.
(This political position was articulated in a very notorious article on Jihadwatch by Roland Shirk at a critical point early 2011)
Israpundit and Ted Belman called for the bombing of Libya by NATO planes. Belman is linked with a whole array of Jewish people in the field of Jewish blogging etc. The following NATO bombing and the intervention by a combination of US and British Special Forces which were allied to the Fascist Jihadist Qatar with its also Special Forces and most especially Al Jazeera meant a now Sharia becoming Libya.
Once again we emphasise that Belman does great work in Jewish blogging. But look where he was on Libya. He too has big responsibility for the Jihad coming to power in Egypt and Libya.
Caroline Glick is also a great Jewish writer but as we write calls for the overthrow of Assad and thereby condemns to obliteration vital Syrian minorities, Christans Kurds and Assyrians, who will all have to flee if Assad is overthrown.
Glick again is in denial that Assad is in a fight against the Jihad. But he is. Glick allows emotions to determine here programme. It is a repeat of Belman on bombing of Libya, and Spencer/Geller no dog in the Egypt fight.
Glick by calling for Assad to be defeated is threading the same path and is enabling the Jihad to come to power, is facilitating the Muslim Brotherhood to come to power in Syria. Almost unbelievable!
THESE POLITICAL POSITIONS COST LIVES!
I can go on. The list is endless. There are many others adding up to a huge crisis of leadership in the world of Jewish leadership.
There are other reasons outside the Jewish leadership situation.
Look at Ireland, where the intervention of Felix Quigley on the Indymedia Ireland site has shown that the Irish left has covered up for the role of the CIA. The CIA was funding Libyan Jihadists against Muammar Gadhafi IN Dublin and IN Ireland throughout 2009 and 2010.
We will explore this later. But basically the CIA was using the Left in Ireland, especially the SWP and the Flotillas against Gaza, in order to promote the Jihad against Muammar Gadhafi, which ended in the massacre of big numbers of poor Black Africans in places like Masrata.
This has proved that the Irish Left is a tool of the CIA and also of British Intelligence.

A NEW LIGHT ON THE “GOOD FRIDAY” AGREEMENT
This certainly throws a new light on the Republican Sinn Fein Gerry Adams leadership and how they caved in on the issue of national self determination, thereby Sinn Fein making a deal with the British Imperialist Government of Blair, and with the most reactionary side of Ulster Protestantism, the totally Catholic Hating DUP (Democratic Unionist Party) of Ian Paisley, the eternal anti catholic bigot.
Due to this discovery of CIA involvement we now can ask who really was guiding Sinn Fein in those days of the “Good Friday Agreement”?
Where does this leave us?
The left is in the pocket of the CIA and of British Intelligence.
Irish Republicanism is totally a busted flush and has to answer questions about the Good Friday Agreement with Paisleyism.
Jews face a potential Holocaust at the hands of Iran and the Arab Spring Jihad movement. Yet Jewish leaders could not defend Mubarak, Gadhafi and now Assad. This is sadly fact.

The political situation concerning Israel, the US and Iran is moving at such speed that all bourgeois commentators are being left way behind.
The issue is basically simple though.
Obama will live with Iran and the Nuclear Bomb.
Israel leaders weak as they are cannot.
This has led to a clear break between Netanyahu and Obama on the issue of Iran and its Nuclear Bomb. It centres on the assessment of Israeli Intelligence which has made it known 4 years ago that Iran was past the point of no return and that sanctions would never stop Iran getting the Nuclear Bomb and thus directly threatening Israel with extinction.
To understand the gravity of this it is necessary to study the many statements coming out of the Iranian leaders over recent years, which the ADL has comprehensively catalogued.
Netanyahu yesterday drew the lines between himself and Obama. There is one problem though. From reports Israel has promised Obama to give 12 hours notice.

On no condition must Israel give any warning or news about anything to the US Government and moreover Israel should immediately end the US money grant, and should ensure that all US personnel is out of Israel. The left as it is known today has totally betrayed its trust to the Jews and to History. But the solution has to come from the left because capitalism is a terminal basket case, it cannot lead humanity forward in any sphere and threatens all of life, including all of animal life. The role of Russia and China in this regard is just as dangerous as is the US and Europe.

Among other things Obama’s sanctions are a death sentence to Israel. All of the states of the world are mired with Israel hatred which is code for Jew Hatred (Antisemitism)
All states refuse the sanctions against Iran and this becomes a fatal delaying mechanism.
