People are generally asleep. Their concerns of daily living overwhelm. But to understand Syria they must see Egypt.

Go back to June 2009. Mubarak was a benevolent dictator and he put down as best as he could Fascist Sharia Law.

That is the big issue in the world today, especially in Arab and Muslim countries. Sharia Law enslaves Muslims, especially Muslim women. It murders Gays. Hates young girls especially. Kills rebellious youth.

Obama went to Cairo, his first visit abroad in June 2009. He adopted the Muslim Brotherhood. Then supported by Obama the protests grew. Obama told the old ally that he had to step down. It was impossible for Mubarak to survive.

Basically a period had to go by when the youth and girls int he protest movement learned more fully about Morsi. This they did.

The result was the biggest crowds on the street in the history of mankind. Not an insignificant event.

Obama was defeated. McCain was defeated. Cameron was defeated.

Nearly two months after Egypt’s June 30 Revolution, it is interesting to note how the final dialogue between ousted President Morsi and General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi—full of threats and vows of determination on both sides—have all come to pass, including in the very details, specifically the U.S. government’s role. On July 5, the Arabic language, Egyptian newspaper El Watan published what it said were the final words between the two Egyptian men, as transcribed by an eyewitness, before the general put the president in prison. (Original and complete English translation here.)

The relevant portions of the dialogue between Sisi and Morsi follow, interspersed with my retrospective observations where appropriate:

Abridged Exchange Between Morsi and Sisi

Morsi: What’s the military’s position concerning what’s going on? Is it just going to stand by watching? Shouldn’t it protect the legitimacy?

Sisi: What legitimacy? The entire army is with the will of the people, and the overwhelming majority of people, according to documented reports, don’t want you.

Morsi: My supporters are many and they won’t be silent.

Morsi’s first threat is generic and subtle. Not yet pushed to the brink, Morsi simply alludes to his “supporters,” who “are many and they won’t be silent.” No word yet as to who these supporters are or what they will do.

Sisi: The army will not allow anyone to destroy the nation, no matter what happens. An early indicator of military resolve, one that, to this day, does not appear to have diminished.

Morsi: What if I don’t want to leave?

Sisi: The matter is settled and no longer up to you. Try to leave with your dignity and tell those whom you call supporters to go back to their homes in order to prevent bloodshed, instead of threatening the people through them.

Morsi: But this way it will be a military coup, and America won’t leave you alone. While technically a military coup, the military was reacting to a popular revolution: tens of millions of Egyptians—many more than in the original 2011 revolution against Hosni Mubarak—took to the streets for several days demanding new elections (as many Egyptians from the very start insisted that Morsi never even won the presidential election). And nearly two month later, months of intense pressure and threats, the U.S., in Morsi’s words, certainly shows no signs that it will “leave you [Egyptian military] alone.”

Sisi: The people concern us, not America. And since you’ve started to talk this way, I’ll talk to you candidly. We have evidence to condemn you and to condemn many governmental officials of compromising Egypt’s national security. The judiciary will have its say and you will all be judged before the whole people.

Once Morsi becomes more specific about who his supporters are—the United States, a foreign entity—Sisi also becomes candid, pointing out to him that the military has evidence to condemn Morsi and his Brotherhood cabinet. In recent weeks and days, talk of this evidence has become more widespread. According to many Egyptian political activists, the Brotherhood and the Obama administration made a deal, which has seen the exchange of vast sums of money, possibly at the hands of President Obama’s half-brother, Malik Obama. Add to this the recent assertions of Tahani al-Gebali, Vice President of the Supreme Constitutional Court in Egypt: “Obama’s brother is one of the architects of investment for the international organization of the Muslim Brotherhood.” Moreover, that the U.S. government, including ambassador Anne Patterson and Senators Graham and McCain, has been pressuring Egypt to release Morsi and other key Brotherhood figures, such as multimillionaire Khairat al-Shatter—even though they are also being held in connection to incitement and terrorism against Egyptian civilians—only validates the idea that imprisoned Brotherhood leadership, when tried, may well spill the beans as to the nature of the relationship between Morsi’s ousted government and the Obama administration, hence the reason the latter is so adamant about getting them released. […]

Morsi: Don’t think the Brotherhood is going to stand by if I leave office. They will set the world on fire.

True, indeed. While the Brotherhood’s media wing in Qatar, also known as “Al Jazeera,” has been blasting a 24/7 media propaganda campaign dedicated to demonizing the military and garnering sympathy for the Brotherhood—often by flagrantly lying—the Brotherhood and its supporters have quite literally been “setting the world on fire,” most visibly in Egypt, where some 80 churches and other Christian institutions, not to mention government buildings, etc., have been set aflame.

Sisi: Just let them try something and you’ll see the reaction of the army. Whoever among them wants to live in peace, he’s more than welcome; otherwise, [if they try anything] we will not leave them alone. We will not single anyone out, and the Brotherhood is from the Egyptian people, so don’t try to use them as fuel for your disgusting war. If you truly love them, leave office and let them go to their homes.

Morsi: Anyway, I’m not going, and the people outside of Egypt are all with me, and my supporters are not going.

Again, Morsi indicates who his two main supporters are: “the people outside of Egypt,” that is, the United States, and “my supporters,” the Muslim Brotherhood and its many Islamist sympathizers in and out of Egypt.

Morsi: Okay, if I agree to be removed, will you allow me to travel abroad and promise not to imprison me?

Sisi: I can’t offer you any promises. It’s the justice [department] that will pass its verdict.

Morsi: Okay, if that’s the case, I’ll make it war, and we’ll see who will prevail in the end.

Sisi: Naturally the people will win.

The verdict is still out concerning the fate of Egypt. For true to Morsi’s threats, the U.S. and the Brotherhood and its allies—from church-burning thugs in Egypt’s streets, to Al Jazeera’s media manipulations—are still trying to undermine the Egyptian people’s June 30 Revolution against the corrupt, Islamist rule of the Muslim Brotherhood.

VITAL REPORT..IT WAS CLEARLY FALSE FLAG BY MUSLIM BROTHERHOOD

The Obama administration has selectively used intelligence to justify military strikes on Syria, former military officers with access to the original intelligence reports say, in a manner that goes far beyond what critics charged the Bush administration of doing in the run-up to the 2003 Iraq war.

According to these officers, who served in top positions in the United States, Britain, France, Israel, and Jordan, a Syrian military communication intercepted by Israel’s famed Unit 8200 electronic intelligence outfit has been doctored so that it leads a reader to just the opposite conclusion reached by the original report.

The doctored report was leaked to a private Internet-based newsletter that boasts of close ties to the Israeli intelligence community, and led to news reports that the United States now had firm evidence showing that the Syrian government had ordered the chemical weapons attack on August 21 against a rebel-controlled suburb of Damascus.

The doctored report was picked up on Israel’s Channel 2 TV  on Aug. 24, then by Focus magazine in Germany, the Times of Israel, and eventually by The Cable  in Washington, DC.

According to the doctored report, the chemical attack was carried out by the 155th Brigade of the 4th Armored Division of the Syrian Army, an elite unit commanded by Maher al-Assad, the president’s brother.

However, the original communication intercepted by Unit 8200 between a major in command of the rocket troops assigned to the 155th Brigade of the 4th Armored Division, and the general staff, shows just the opposite.

The general staff officer asked the major if he was responsible for the chemical weapons attack. From the tone of the conversation, it was clear that “the Syrian general staff were out of their minds with panic that an unauthorized strike had been launched by the 155th Brigade in express defiance of their instructions,” the former officers say.

According to the transcript of the original Unit 8200 report, the major “hotly denied firing any of his missiles” and invited the general staff to come and verify that all his weapons were present.

The report contains a note at the end that the major was interrogated by Syrian intelligence for three days, then returned to command of his unit. “All of his weapons were accounted for,” the report stated.

The New York Times reported this morning  that the White House is now backing off its claims to have a “smoking gun that directly links President Bashar al-Assad to the attack.”

The new argument is more deductive: since the Assad regime has chemical weapons and chemical weapons were used in Mouadhamiya, therefore the Syrian regime must have been the ones to use them.

But even that line of reasoning falls down when confronted with evidence known to the U.S. intelligence community, and presumably, to Congress.

An Egyptian intelligence report describes a meeting in Turkey between military intelligence officials from Turkey and Qatar and Syrian rebels. One of the participants states, “there will be a game changing event on August 21st” that will “bring the U.S. into a bombing campaign” against the Syrian regime.

The chemical weapons strike on Moudhamiya, an area under rebel control, took place on August 21. “Egyptian military intelligence insists it was a combined Turkish/Qatar/rebel false flag operation,” said a source familiar with the report.

The White House has gone to great lengths to shut down any independent investigation of the facts.

A UN inspection team was on the ground in Damascus on August 21 when the Moudhamiya attack occurred, where they were awaiting authorization from the Syrian government to visit sites of earlier alleged chemical weapons attacks.

Once word of Moudhamiya broke and the inspectors announced they planned to refocus their investigation on the fresh attack rather than the earlier ones, the White House was telling the UN to back off from gathering the facts.

 

 

 

THE CRISIS IN CAPITALISM AND WAR AGAINST SYRIA

In Spain there is an unemployment rate among youth who have left college of 70 per cent and it is the same in Greece and Portugal. Note that in these countries there is an elite which continues to live in some wealth. These are conditions sooner or later for a mass social upheaval but not revolution, just a dead end, because there is no revolutionary party to lead.

 

This reflects the world. The US is the leader of capitalism today. The US seeks to undermine all opposition to it on a world scale and to rule unfettered. Leaders like Gadhafi who oppose the US but note are not socialist in any way pose a problem and must be put down. Assad is the same difficulty for these Fascist World Leaders as is the US and also must be put down.

 

Why does Assad fight? This has nothing at all to do with Iran or Hizbullah. It is because Assad is an Alawite minority and must seek a secular answer in Syria. This is why the Christian Syrians to a man support Assad, an Alawite Muslim. Assad above all stands for secularism/

 

This is the type of leader that the US must destroy but why?

 

The reason the US turns against Assad is that the great friend and ally of US is the Muslim Brotherhood, which in turn is a Fascist Movement.

 

The Muslim Brotherhood was the closest ally of the Nazis as they carried out the Industrial Killing of the Jews in the Holocaust. The MB want a THEOCRATIC state with Sharia Law installed.

 

Why does that suit the US as it seeks a world government of total control. The reason is that the Muslim Brotherhood, and indeed Islam and its Koran, is above all an ideology and government of total control, control in the first instance of poor Muslims.

 

Europe has lost totally its independence. Ideologically leaders like Cameron and Hague are no longer English. They are the tools of US power. They want bread crumbs from the table.

 

A country like Spain has totally lost its independence. The 70% unemployment rate among youth can never be fixed under world capitalism.

 

In the 1930s Spain joined with Hitler to put down the workers. The Stalinists also murdered all the socialist leaders. Leaders like Andres Nin in Barcelona. The whole leadership around Trotsky was wiped out in the Camps by the Stalinists. Trotsky’s whole family were also lost. Many shot by the Stalinists.

 

What will Spain do in this period? It is already showing us and is joining the US.

 

Yugoslavia showed us all that the United Nations is part of this planned world Fascist Government. Yugoslavia also showed that the UN and NATO are one and the same thing.

 

Assad should never have allowed the UN Inspectors into his country. He was weak there. He was pressured to do this by Putin. The Russian Government also betrayed the Serbs and set them up to be conquered where the Serbs have lost their patriotic heart in Kosovo.

 

Funny that! This new NATO US power want the Jews also out of their heart and soul, which is Judea and Samaria.

 

This war on Assad is more than a war on Assad. It also leads in to NATO Fascist power, which involves a new Holocaust of the Jews, because please remember what I said, this new NATO Fascism will rule along with Islam, just as Hitler tried to do.

Syria: Anti-Assad operation has begun

According to our information, the regime’s opponents, supervised by Jordanian, Israeli and American commandos, have been moving towards Damascus since mid-August. This attack could explain the possible recourse to chemical weapons by the Syrian president.

If it is still too early to categorically rule out the argument put forward by Damascus and Moscow, who blame the massacre on the Syrian opposition, it is already possible to provide answers to a troubling question: What benefit would Assad have realized by launching an unconventional attack at the precise moment he had to allow UN inspectors — after being held up for several months — to investigate the use of chemical weapons?

First of all, operational logic. According to information obtained by Le Figaro, the first contingent of Syrian troops trained in guerrilla warfare by the Americans in Jordan have reportedly been sent into action since mid-August in southern Syria, in the region of Deraa. A first group of 300 men, undoubtedly supported by Israeli and Jordanian commandos, as well as by CIA operatives, crossed the border on August 17. A second was to have joined on the 19th. According to military sources, for several months the Americans, who do not want to put troops on the Syrian soil, nor arm any rebels controlled in part by radical Islamists, quietly assembled handpicked ASL fighters, the Free Syrian Army, in a training camp set up at the Jordanian-Syrian border.

Sense of impunity

During the summer their protégés have begun to push against Syrian battalions in the south, approaching the capital. “Their impact would now be felt in the Ghouta, where formations of the FSA were already at work, but really can make a difference on the outskirts of the fortifications of Damascus,” says David Rigoulet-Roze, a researcher at the French Institute for Strategic Analysis (IFAS).

According to this expert on the region, the idea proposed by Washington would be the possible establishment of a buffer zone separating the south of Syria, or even a no-fly zone, which would permit the opposition to train in complete security until the balance of power changes. This is the reason why the United States deployed Patriot batteries and F16s in Jordan in late June.

Recent military pressure exerted against al-Ghouta threatens the capital Damascus, the heart of the Syrian regime. In July the spokesman for President al-Assad publicly stated that the regime would not use chemical weapons in Syria “except in case of external aggression.” The intrusion of foreign agents into the south, for example…

It is also combined with an article which appears on www.Israpundit.com which has a Daniel Greenfield saying that “THERE IS NO DOUBT” that Assad used chemical weapons etc.

 

But Greenfield like Debka does not give any of his sources. The use of the words “there is no doubt” is an old and discredited journalist technique. If there is no doubt then Greenfield will have done his due research and will be happy to publish the proof with his sources named.

 

If Israel is involved in any way with the troops invading Syria then those Israeli troops will be under the direction of the CIA. That is American Imperialism CIA. That is American Imperialism CIA that hates Jews and hates Israel and seeks to place in power the Fatah branch of the Muslim Brotherhood.

 

Jews now like Ted Belman who edits Israpundit are faced with a moment of truth. Will they take up a position, the only correct for Jews position, of defending Assad from the combination of the Muslim Brotherhood (like Morsi and Erdogan) and the forces of British, French and US Imperialism?

 

Or will he do the opposite, that is line up WITH the Muslim Brotherhood against Assad?

 

There is no sitting on the fence. NATO is planning a repeat of what they did in the bombing of Yugoslavia following another fake scenario … The Racak Massacre which was masterminded as a fake and montage by the Central American CIA killer William Walker.

 

But more! The whole of the history of the Israeli Jewish movement over the past 20 years has been one of having to fight against such staged falsities, like Jenin where the PLO and the United Nations were claiming the Israelis had massacred thousands of Palestinian Arabs. or the El Dura lie. Or the Qana lies. Or the Beach Bombings. All staged for the Media.

 

We have recognised since the time of Georgia that this Israeli ruling class is a corrupt and snivelling thing, always crawling at the feet of US and EU Imperialism, never striking out and saying “This is what we must do”.

 

So if Figaro is correct then the Israeli ruling class are involved here too with the CIA and no doubt Erdogan, also Morsi until Sisi rightly kicked him and his murderers of Copts and burners of Coptic Chuches out.

 

Behind all of these betrayals of Jews by this Israeli rulers the Fascist Antisemites of Iran who hold all of their Holocaust Denying Events keep on preparing for the day when they have the Nuclear Bomb, and can end what they call the “Zionist Cancer”, or whatever words they chose to use, while the UN welcomes these Nazis into speak with the whole Media not saying a word.

 

If Israel thinks these Nazis are preparing a Nuclear Bomb then it has a right to go to war to prevent that.

 

Remember that Leon Trotsky wanted to move the Red Army across and stop Hitler from taking State Power in 1933. Chamberlain thought that a talk with Hitler would convince Hitler. But some ideologies cannot be talked to.

 

I think that this is the case with Iran. I also think that that is the true Trotskyist position to take.

This deals with a Sarin Gas attack that took place in Syria in March of this year, a few months ago.

The Ambassador from Russia wrote about this and what the Russians did. They are more reliable truth wise tan the US or Britain. The Ambassador´s name is Churkin:

An official says suspected Islamist extremists killed at least 44 villagers in continuing attacks in an Islamic uprising in northeast Nigeria.The official of the National Emergency Management Agency says the attackers hit Dumba village in Borno state before dawn Tuesday and slit their victims’ throats — a new strategy since gunfire attracts security forces.

Dumba is near the fishing village of Baga where security forces in March gunned down 187 civilians in retaliation for an attack by extremists.

Borno is one of three northeastern states under a state of emergency declared May 14 to crack down on the Boko Haram terrorist network.

New video posted on YouTube purports to show the graphic murder – execution style – of three Syrian truck drivers who did nothing more than belong to a minority faith the local Al Qaeda affiliate does not like.

 

In the video, a small band of Islamist radicals with the Al Qaeda-linked ISIS (Islamic State in Iraq and Syria) group is seen waving the tractor trailers off the side of an Iraqi road and then proceeds to interrogate the unsuspecting drivers about their prayer habits, trying to discover if they are Sunnis or members of the Alawite minority in Syria.

 

When they “fail” the Sunni jihadis’ pop roadside quiz, the truck drivers are seated in a line in the median of the road and shot in the back of their heads firing squad style by the self-appointed law enforcers, jury, judge and executioner.

 

The three truck drivers are shot in the back repeatedly, as chants of Allahu Akbar (Allah is the greatest) are audible in the background.

 

More than a dozen shots are fired into the men’s bodies, even after it appears they are already dead.

 

Joshua Landis, who is President of the Syria Studies Association in the U.S. and is Director of the Center for Middle East Studies at the University of Oklahoma tweeted, “Iraqi #ISIS stop three #Alawite truck drivers; ask them how many time they kneel for prayer. His first overseas visit was in June 2009 to Cairo Islamic University Meeting. There he insisted that the illegal Muslim Brothers be present. Obama told Mubarak to resign and to make way for “democracy” which was code for make way for the Muslim Brotherhood and Sharia

Mubarak as part of the Army Organization in Egypt was the bitter enemy of the Muslim Brotherhood. The defence of Christians against Jihad is a major revolutionary issue, for revolutionaries, but wsws are not that.

After a week of massacres that have left thousands of unarmed protesters killed or wounded, the Egyptian military junta is moving to free the hated former dictator, Hosni Mubarak, who has sat in prison since a revolutionary uprising of the working class forced his ouster in February 2011.

When a judge cleared Mubarak on corruption charges yesterday, Mubarak’s lawyer Farid el-Deeb told the press: “All we have left is a simple administrative procedure that should take no more than 48 hours. He should be freed by the end of the week.”

Daily Beast quotes US senator as saying Obama administration has decided to temporarily suspend military aid to Egypt.

Israel has urged the US to back the Egyptian military, saying losing  Egypt to Islamists could pose a risk the Israeli-Palestinian peace  talks, The Wall Street Journal reported on Monday.

 

According to an Israeli official quoted by the paper, Egypt and Saudi Arabia have traditionally played an important role in providing the Palestinians  the support to stay in the negotiations and to make concessions, and  without them there is a chance the talks will fail.

 

The paper also reported on a parallel effort by Israel, Saudi Arabia and  the United Arab Emirates to influence the US into backing the Egyptian  military.

According to the report, Israel and the US’s Gulf allies are urging the Obama administration to encourage the Egyptian military  to confront rather than reconcile with the Muslim Brotherhood.

OUR ANSWER TO THE DANGER THAT JEWS ARE IN FROM THE KERRY/LIVNI/ABBAS TALKS

This is where NATO with the help of national traitors comes in.

What is always left out by idealist and anti-materialist thinkers is the overall crisis in the capitalist system, a system which drives towards dictatorial rule behind NATO. Capitalism is a system Ted in total decline. It is a system which literally threatens all life on earth.

At least that was the main lesson of the events which led to the total destruction of Yugoslavia. Yes the components of Yugoslavia were diverging but it surely took the intervention of NATO to fight not one but two wars to end it. The result was the extension of NATO and the side-lining of Serbs as an oppositional force.

In this regard the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt may have had a setback yesterday but this must be seen against the overall NATO plans, which is to control all of the world.

The view of NATO controlling the world would not be opposed by Netanyahu or by the bulk of the Israeli population. Inside that a powerless Jewish state may or may not survive, it would be all the same really to NATO

The Palestinian Narrative, based of course on lies, plays right into this overall NATO control of the world. “Palestinianism” has become like a religion and serves to block all critical faculties in people who are led by the nose everywhere by a Media which itself is controlled by NATO.

This is why it was impossible to get the truth through about Yugoslavia. Totally impossible as was seen even on Israpundit where most Jews could not recognise the overall NATO strategy.

Thus it is also totally impossible to get the truth through about Palestinianism. The power of NATO in closing down all knowledge of these vital issues is already complete. It again affirms capitalism as a system in its death throes where basic knowledge is not allowed. This gives new light on the campaign against the freedom fighter Geller and others.

Martin Sherman does not deal sufficiently with this overall control of NATO.

The United Nations in Yugoslavia played a subservient role to NATO. It was American and British NATO forces which placed the KLA in power and which drove the Serbs out of Kosovo. The UN had become a rubber stamp. Similarly Jamie Shea answered why would NATO be brought before the Hague, NATO WAS the Hague Shea said. Again capitalism descends into barbarity.

It would be unwise to underestimate Kerry and Obama.

This is why I see the emphasis at this early stage of the talks in which Livni is in a controlling position (everything private…nobody knows what they are agreeing on) is on deciding the borders of a Palestinian state.

As Sherman knows this is the issue that will crush Israel because it will be NATO troops which will move in to the large areas of Judea and Samaria, or as they call it Palestinian territory in which repeated by the BBC ten times a day every day the Jewish presence is illegal, and it will be NATO with the connivance of a large section of Israeli society which will cleanse that area of Jews. In a new way the PLO will move in behind NATO. No matter that it will be like Kosovo a land of misery, repression and international crime, the aims of NATO as the world policeman will be furthered. The Jews because of their central history in mankind will be neutered. That all depends on the promotion of traitorous leaders and all of them in one way or another are. Definitely includes Feiglin. The new parties of the last election have already sold out.

Unless Yamit82 stops his vicious attacks on Trotskyism, stops his refusal to put forward a real programme to stop that, stops retreating when fought against to call for the intervention of God (why would he, that is intervene, did he intervene in the death camps 1939 to 45? He says there are so many hundreds of thousands of Jews in Judea and Samaria so that cannot be overcome. Sorry it most certainly can be overcome. As Yamit correctly says Bennett betrayed by not reacting immediately to the talks and pulling his party out of the Coalition. (Least said about Feiglin the better) For Bennett read Milosevic who also prevaricated in the face of NATO. As Sherman knows you cannot trick time, meaning when you take up a false position it is seldom you can recover that ground. Each false position is ground lost. They are moving relentlessly thanks to these false leaders to set borders for a Palestine state and NATO will be the weapon. You could well have troops from Australia in Judea and Samaria, think of that NormanF

There is not going to be a peace agreement! My guess is the PA will get slightly more territory and international aid to stay afloat. That is all that can be reasonably achieved for the foreseeable future. No hidden agenda here – that would imply true convergence. I don’t see it happening.

As for the last point, mass evacuation of the settlers is a fantasy. The Israeli army and police quite simply don’t have the manpower to remove several hundred thousand Jews and the Israeli government’s demolition of outposts is accomplished only with great difficulty and these are rapidly rebuilt afterwards. A permanent Jewish presence in Judea and Samaria is a fact of life and the bell cannot be unrung now.

An additional point was made by the writer, Felix Quigley, to the above analysis, as thus:

There can not be a solution for NATO which is separate from the internationalising of Jerusalem. NATO must do this because Jews hold a pivotal role in history. In order for NATO to expand its power through the Middle East and incorporating Africa, Australia and South America then that Jewish presence must be negated. This is why the greatest struggle of all may be the Jews to destroy the Mohammedan presence and rebuild the temple. This is the great significance of General Dayan surrendering the Temple in 1967. Dayan thought there could be an Israeli secular power distinct from religion but that is false. The Jews are their religion. Their religion is also the history of the Jews. You can see therefore why NATO has to destroy this aspect of the Jews, and they know if they do this, and with the Vatican at the side of NATO, then the road clears for NATO power through Africa, the Americas, Russia and China. Countries like Canada who some think a friend of Israel, but is not, will be in on this great expansion of NATO.

New settlements on West Bank as Israeli-Palestinian talks begin

Just days after the preliminary “talks about talks” between Israel and the Palestinian Authority began in Washington, Israel approved new settlement construction in East Jerusalem and the West Bank.

Palestinian negotiators have long insisted on a settlement freeze as a precondition for talks, walking out of previous talks in September 2010. Israel’s provocative move confirms that it has no intention of reaching a deal on anything other than its own terms. These include:

*The annexation of all of East Jerusalem, which the Palestinians consider as their capital, and of Area C—the two thirds of the West Bank temporarily entrusted to the Israeli military under the 1993 Oslo Accords, where Israelis outnumber the 100,000 Palestinians still living there 3 to 1.

*The demilitarisation of the West Bank, whose borders will be controlled by Israel.

*The recognition of Israel as a “Jewish State”, a de facto mechanism for preventing any”return” of the 1948 and 1967 Palestinian refugees and their descendants to their former homes, and ensuring the transfer of Israeli Arabs to any putative Palestinian state.

Such a state, non-contiguous and without sovereignty, would be unacceptable to the Palestinian people, though not to large sections of the Palestinian nationalist organisation, Fatah. It relies on exploiting Palestinian cheap labour—and on handouts from the United States, Europe and the Gulf States—for its own enrichment.

The Obama administration exerted heavy pressure on the Palestinians to restart talks, which aim to provide the necessary quid pro quo to encourage Jordan, Egypt and the Gulf oil sheikhdoms to support a war to topple Syrian president Bashar Al-Assad and isolate Iran. All these sclerotic regimes face a restive working class, for whom the Israel-Palestine conflict and US-led wars in Iraq, Libya and Syria are explosive issues.

The US-sponsored talks also serve to cover Israel’s ever more rapacious land grab. On Sunday, Housing Minister Uri Ariel of the pro-settler Jewish Home party gave his final approval to the construction of 1,187 apartments. Of these, 793 will be built in East Jerusalem, which was annexed by Israel in defiance of international law shortly after the 1967 War; 394 will be built in the West Bank settlements, including Maaleh Adumim, Efrat and Ariel. This last settlement, located in the heart of the West Bank, makes it impossible to create a contiguous Palestinian statelet.

Ariel issued a statement saying, “No country in the world takes orders from other countries where it can build and where it can’t. We will continue to market housing and build in the entire country.”

This came after the approval of hundreds more housing units in settlements and a new settlement in East Jerusalem.

A few days earlier, Israel published an expanded list of settlements (from 85 to 91) in the West Bank eligible for special government subsidies, including several previously deemed illegal—without official approval by the Israeli authorities.

The settlement expansion is part of a broader plan to drive Palestinians off their land and replace them with Israeli communities.

While this takes place, world media has focused on the release of a first group of Palestinian prisoners, 26 out of a total of 104 pledged. The US pushed for this as a”confidence building measure” to provide Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas with a fig leaf to justify returning to the talks.

Some of the prisoners had objected to their release. The longest-serving prisoner wrote to Abbas saying they “didn’t want to be used as a bargaining chip.” The letter continued, “You should not agree with the releases to give way in any way in these peace talks.”

The prisoner release is much less than it seems. As all except one of the prisoners were arrested before 1994, eight were due for release in the next three years and two in the next six months. Few are well known. Ministers stressed that “if one of those released returned to hostile activities against Israel, he will be returned to complete his sentence.”

Israel has already backtracked on its agreement with the Obama administration, saying it would release a further 78 jailed for attacks carried out before 1993 in several stages over the next few months, “depending upon progress in the talks”. Clearly, Israel anticipates that the Palestinians will pull out as Israeli demands increase, thereby justifying its refusal to release the prisoners.

US secretary of state John Kerry had earlier said that Israel would release, in phases, about 80 veteran Palestinian prisoners who had served more than 20 years in Israeli jails and that 350 prisoners would be released in phases over the coming months.

Both the prisoner release and the settlement construction were, according to the BBC, coordinated with US officials as part of the pre-talks framework agreed by Israeli and Palestinian negotiators in late July. Speaking during a visit to Colombia, Kerry said that Israeli announcements “were to some degree expected because we have known that there was going to be a continuation of some building in certain places.”

The US, European Union (EU) and UN issued standard, pro forma statements criticising the settlement expansion plans. However, Washington has long supported Israel’s expansionist drive, financially and diplomatically. It even vetoed a UN Security Council resolution backed by the 14 other members in February 2011 that would have merely “urged” a halt to settlement building.

Kerry’s comments make clear that Palestinians should expect a browbeating. He called on the Palestinians “not to react adversely” to Israel’s latest plans, urging the parties to move ahead with the talks.

Chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat said that Israel’s plans for new homes on occupied land aimed to scupper peace talks that resumed yesterday, but he was optimistic that talks with Israel would continue. This all but confirms that the nod was indeed given to the settlements at the pre-talks in New York, with tacit Fatah support.

The current talks in Jerusalem take place in the aftermath of the army coup that overthrew the Muslim Brotherhood regime of President Mohamed Mursi in Egypt.

Encouraged by the US, Egypt’s new military junta is working closely with Tel Aviv, continuing the long-standing foreign policy of US imperialism since the Camp David Accords of 1978-1999. Together, they struck targets in the Sinai Peninsula last weekend in an apparently coordinated campaign against Islamist forces active among Bedouin tribes of the region.

The junta has also destroyed and flooded the tunnels linking Gaza and Egypt, used to smuggle goods and circumvent Israel’s six-year-long blockade, and is closing the border with Gaza, which is controlled by Hamas, the Palestinian offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood. In this way, it is acting to further isolate Gaza, divide the Palestinians, and thus aid Israel’s expansionist plans.
