Ehud Barak meets Robert Gates in D.C.

Prime minister Binyamin Netanyahu convened his inner cabinet Saturday night, March 12, to discuss the spiraling crisis with Washington and his first response.
debkafile’s military and Washington sources report: The Obama administration is considering withholding from Israel military items urgently needed in case of a flare-up of hostilities with Iran. This would further ratchet up the mounting row over Israel’s decision to build another 1,600 homes in E. Jerusalem. The requests were filed by defense minister Ehud Barak as recently as Feb. 26, when he visited Washington and met defense secretary Robert Gates and secretary of state Hillary Clinton.
In an exceptionally harsh phone call to Netanyahu Friday, March, Clinton herself hinted at this possibility while administering a dressing-down on the East Jerusalem housing decision and its announcement during Vice president Joe Biden’s visit.
Reporting on that phone call, State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley disclosed: “The secretary said she could not understand how this happened, particularly in light of the United States’ strong commitment to Israel’s security.”
Washington correspondents interpreted this as a threat to withhold items vital for Israel’s security unless the prime minister reversed that decision (which Palestinians now demand as the precondition for resuming peace talks).

Our military sources report that the Barak arms list is tailored to a potential four-front offensive against Israel launched by Iran and its allies. It includes systems needed by the Israeli Air Force, certain types of missiles and advanced electronic equipment. During his last visit, the defense minster complained the list had been pending in Washington for more than three months and the sands for a possible conflict were running out fast. He stressed that it was essential for these items to reach Israel before a flare-up occurred. The urgency was such that he suggested that if they could not be supplied to Israel at short notice, they should at least be held ready meanwhile in the emergency stores of the US bases in Israel’s Negev.

Gates promised Barak to study the list and let him have his answer in the coming days, but none has so far been received.
Some circles in the United States and many in Israel say the Obama administration is blowing the crisis up with deliberate intent.  American-Jewish criticism was led Saturday night by the Anti-Defamation League’s Abraham Foxman, who issued this statement: “We are shocked and stunned at the Administration’s tone and public dressing down of Israel on the issue of future building in Jerusalem,” he said. “One can only wonder how far the US is prepared to go in distancing itself from Israel in order to placate the Palestinians.”

Defense sources in Washington reported Saturday the view that the Obama administration, which has never cultivated warm relations with the Netanyahu government, has seized on the Jerusalem housing spat as a device for restraining Israel from attacking Iran’s nuclear sites, a step which the White House strenuously opposes.

The United States has been fighting a war in the Islamic world since 2001. Its main theaters of operation are in Afghanistan and Iraq, but its politico-military focus spreads throughout the Islamic world, from Mindanao to Morocco. The situation on Aug. 7, 2008, was as follows:

1. The war in Iraq was moving toward an acceptable but not optimal solution. The government in Baghdad was not pro-American, but neither was it an Iranian puppet, and that was the best that could be hoped for. The United States anticipated pulling out troops, but not in a disorderly fashion.
2. The war in Afghanistan was deteriorating for the United States and NATO forces. The Taliban was increasingly effective, and large areas of the country were falling to its control. Force in Afghanistan was insufficient, and any troops withdrawn from Iraq would have to be deployed to Afghanistan to stabilize the situation. Political conditions in neighboring Pakistan were deteriorating, and that deterioration inevitably affected Afghanistan.
3. The United States had been locked in a confrontation with Iran over its nuclear program, demanding that Tehran halt enrichment of uranium or face U.S. action. The United States had assembled a group of six countries (the permanent members of the U.N. Security Council plus Germany) that agreed with the U.S. goal, was engaged in negotiations with Iran, and had agreed at some point to impose sanctions on Iran if Tehran failed to comply. The United States was also leaking stories about impending air attacks on Iran by Israel or the United States if Tehran didn’t abandon its enrichment program. The United States had the implicit agreement of the group of six not to sell arms to Tehran, creating a real sense of isolation in Iran.

THE SREBRENICA LIE WILL EXIST SO LONG AS CAPITALISM EXISTS

Using their archives I researched the articles printed by The Irish Times on Srebrenica. This ran into the several hundreds. The number of passing comments into thousands. All bar none accepted the wisdom that 8000 men and boys of Muslim persuasion were murdered by the Serb army at Srebrenica.

The number of such articles by the total world Media must be in the millions. Yet it is a lie. There has never been such a situation that Humanity has ever faced before.

The reasons for the savage attacks on Serbs and on Yugoslavia can be found in the urgent needs for NATO to expand into former Soviet satellites, to surround Russia and China, the aim being war.

For the EU the reasons to destroy the old Yugoslavia was the expansion of the EU. The Serbs of Milosevic stood in the way of this.

Most Jewish people in Israel should have little difficulty in understanding the hoax that was Srebrenica. There have been very many similar in their experience.

Some we can immediately name are, the Dir Yassin “Masacre”, Qana, Jenin, El Durra, the Gaza Beach Bombing and others. Politics via massacre hoax propaganda has become common.

So when about one month after the date of the supposed massacre Madeleine Albright showed to the Media and UN two pictures, one before and one after, of land near Srebrenica (supposedly), and which was supposed to be a mass grave…what to make of it!

And if you believe in that miseducated junk of Creationism then you can also quite easily believe that it is the US Right to make war on Russia and China. And Palin with McCain do believe that to the nth degree.

Georgia has moved the Imperialists much closer to war with Russia and China. This is what the encirclement of Russia by NATO is of course all about. A blind person would see that easily.

Merkel put it clearly in this piece by Spiegel:

Love and suffering. Currently, the chancellor is feeling a bit of both, at least that is what she said last week during a visit to Estonia. Despite all the suffering connected with the latest outbreak of Russian imperialism in Georgia, she said that we should not forget that there are reasons to love Russia. She also said that if Russia were to send its military into Estonia, the country would be covered by Article 5 of the Washington Treaty, meaning that an armed attack against one NATO member is considered an attack against them all. Were that to ever happen, it would be the second time that this article was invoked, the first time being when the alliance offered its assistance to the US after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. War, of course, would be the result.

It was a clear warning to Russia, and one that fit perfectly into the tense atmosphere of last week. It was a week that seemed more diplomatically charged than any in a long time. Moscow has the world on tenterhooks.

The list of geopolitical provocations is long. Russia decided to recognize the breakaway Georgian republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Not long later, French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov lashed out at each other. Mistrust was the dominant mood. Did the Americans help spark the war in Georgia? Did Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili lie to the world about the sequence of events during the war? Is he perhaps even a war criminal? Will Russia further extend its power over its neighbors?

Is this not amazingly clear by this Imperialist German Angela Merkel! Russia lays a finger on any of these NATO stooges which surrounds her and Russia faces war from the most powerful alliance ever created.

And that of course was what Saakashvili wanted in his attack on Tskhinvali, so that an ethnically cleansed South Ossetia would not be a barrier to Georgia entering NATO and thus becoming a similar puppet of the Empire.

3. Saakashvili it is shown here by Spiegel lied about the Russia “invasion”. In fact there was no Russian “invasion”, there was instead a mission which rescued the South Ossetians from GENOCIDE.

4. And to make it even worse those South Ossetians included 20 Jewish families long living in the Jewish Quarter of Tskhinvali

“When I want to call Europe, what number do I dial?” Henry Kissinger once asked while he was serving as US Secretary of State. Today, the same question could even more appropriately be asked of the West. Its phone is not in Washington, and certainly not in Brussels, where on Monday this week the heads of state and government in the EU are meeting to discuss the Georgian crisis. A show of unwavering unity is not expected to emerge from this meeting, but there is some good news: the German-French diplomatic machine is up and running again. The crisis has welded the governments of both countries together. All the irritations of the recent past have been forgotten and replaced by harmony between Paris and Berlin.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who currently holds the rotating EU presidency, closely coordinated the preparations for the special summit with Merkel: phone calls at all levels, no effort spared to find a common position, lavish praise on all sides.

Meanwhile, various ministries in Berlin have started to doubt the credibility of the most problematic friend of the West. Saakashvili, contrary to his own version of events, apparently ordered the attack on South Ossetia before the Russian tanks entered the province from the north via the Roki Tunnel.

‘Carelessly Playing with Fire’

This was reported by military observers working with the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) who were in Georgia at the time. Information from tapped phone conversations involving Georgian political leaders may have also made its way into the reports, which have been leaked from OSCE headquarters in Vienna. One source who is personally familiar with the reports summarized the findings as follows: “Saakashvili lied 100 percent to all of us, the Europeans and the Americans.”

Just last week, the Georgian president told Germany’s mass-circulation Bild newspaper: “We respected the cease-fire. It wasn’t until the Russian tanks rolled into South Ossetia that we deployed our artillery.” The OSCE reports also indicate that Saakashvili attacked the civilian population while they were asleep in their beds. “Our dialogue with Georgia has to become more critical again,” says a top Western diplomat.That could be tantamount to a war crime.

The new “Cold Peace” world.

Merkel and German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier still agree that Germany should play a moderate role: sending critical messages to Russia, solidarity with Georgia, but, all in all, working to defuse the situation. Some people have been “carelessly playing with fire,” said Steinmeier, referring to “all sides” involved. His criticism included the Americans and the Eastern Europeans.

 

Germany would rather not act as an intermediary between the West and Russia, primarily because the Germans are in the Western camp, but Merkel and Steinmeier also want to maintain their good connections with Moscow in order to have an influence on the Russians.

But that could prove to be difficult. Although the chancellor phoned Russian President Dmitry Medvedev last week to voice her criticism of the recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, she did not know if she was speaking with the man who really pulls the strings.

Russia’s strongman these days is Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, who Merkel knows well. However, she is not allowed to talk with him about foreign policy issues because in Russia it is the president who is officially responsible for this area. Diplomacy can be extremely complicated.

No Position to Lead

Merkel faces her next difficult phone call this week. After the EU summit, she is due to call US President George W. Bush to pitch the European line on Russia, assuming there will be one. During the Cold War this would have been a call to the leading Western power. But these days the US is in no position to play a leading role.

Last weekend, Democratic delegates in Denver nominated Barack Obama by acclamation as the first ever African-American presidential candidate. Hundreds of supporters in the hall cried tears of joy — American presidential campaigns are seldom marked by such euphoria. But the world outside the Pepsi Center looked very different. The same Democrats who minutes earlier had been waving their flags now stood outside with a worried expression on their faces. Richard Holbrooke and Madeleine Albright didn’t even try to be optimistic. Trouble is brewing around the world for the US, they said.

Then the diplomats started listing America’s woes. They said that the country’s dependency on foreign oil is dramatic. Every year America pays $600 billion (€400 billion) to oil producing countries. On top of that, there is China’s economic rise, two bogged-down foreign wars, and now Russia has made its return to the international stage, loudly and aggressively, like a throwback to the days of the Soviet Union. “but Cheney is personally responsible for much of the political inheritance that goes to the next president. This Tuesday, Cheney is scheduled to travel to Georgia to show his solidarity with this frontline country. Russia’s aggression must not go unanswered, he said shortly before his departure. Observers in Washington suspect that he may have helped provoke the conflict that he now claims to be solving. One of his most experienced advisors, Joseph R. Wood, was in Tbilisi shortly before the Georgian army launched its military operation.

 

This was only confirmed by Cheney’s office last week. Government sources say that after the conflict erupted, Cheney urged the White House to respond by sending arms to Georgia. The president reportedly rejected the proposal, perhaps after a bit of arm-twisting. US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Defense Secretary Robert Gates are determined not to send the military to yet another country in the five remaining months of the Bush administration.

Rumors are currently circulating in the US that Cheney may have sparked the crisis in Georgia as a favor to the Republican presidential candidate. There is a wealth of evidence to support such a theory. McCain’s foreign policy advisor Randy Scheunemann was a lobbyist for the Georgian government until last May. McCain is a close friend of Saakashvili. If the OSCE allegations concerning Georgia’s war plans are substantiated, it could fuel debate on the issue. In the meantime, an election campaign conducted in the shadow of an international crisis offers McCain a golden opportunity. In the hour of peril, experience is likely to garner more votes than hope. Putin has triggered what McCain urgently needs: a sense of anxiety.

From the very beginning we said that the war against Yugoslavia and the Saakashvili genocidist attack on Tskhinvali in the early hours of August 8 as Ossetians were sleeping represented the first attacks by US and British Imperialism to make war on Russia and China.

The Imperialists want to destroy Russia and China in order to capture the whole Asian market for themselves. But they are weak and divided, a fact which does not lessen the danger from a decadent capitalist system.

The EU was meeting yesterday and they are totally divided because they are meeting a confident and powerful Russia, a Russia which does not owe a dime to anybody. These EU antisemites and haters of all things Russian are weak and divided. Well seen in the Der Spiegel report of today

Even within the EU it is difficult to agree on a strong joint position. Much of the indecision comes out of the fact that the West — particularly its European manifestation — has grown. A number of former Warsaw Pact countries are now a part of the European Union, including the Baltic States, Poland and the Czech Republic. SPIEGEL: Madame Secretary, Russian troops are still in Georgia. Moscow has recognized the independence of the Georgian provinces South Ossetia and Abkhazia and promised them military assistance if necessary. Are we at the beginning of a new Cold War?

 

Albright: Well, we can’t be at the beginning of a new Cold War. That would be a huge step backwards. On the other hand, we can’t afford to stay on the sidelines in this complicated situation. With the invasion of a sovereign country, the Russians have crossed the red line. What is troubling is that Russia is behaving in a way that reminds us of the Russian empire in the 19th century — that is unacceptable in the 21st century.

SPIEGEL: If you were still US Secretary of State, what would you tell the Russians?

Albright: First of all, I would have gone to Moscow, unlike the current Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. It is very important to be direct. I would tell them: That is not acceptable behavior — but also reassure them not to worry about security threats at their borders. I would tell them that they simply misjudged the situation. That has to be corrected.

SPIEGEL: Who would you have delivered your message to? Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin or Russian President Dmitry Medvedev?

Albright: Putin, whatever he calls himself, is in charge. There were many questions about the fact that he had given up the presidency. It is now very clear that he is still calling the shots and has created a Russia that in many ways is not compatible with the 21st century. We want to be able to have a cooperative relationship but the Russians currently make it much more complicated.

SPIEGEL: Moscow compares the situation in Georgia with the recognition of Kosovo’s independence by the US and some European countries this year. Is this a valid analogy?

 

Albright: The comparison is completely mistaken. The Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic had ordered along with his henchmen the ethnic cleansing of Serbia and Kosovo. (Liar. Complete liar…FQ) We worked through a variety of UN resolutions to end this situation, trying to figure out a way to cooperate with the Russians. The situation was simply very different. Plus, there is no comparison between what Milosevic was doing and what the Georgians were trying to do to hold their country together.

(Albright is a complete and utter liar. Albright lied about Milosevic and the Serbs in Kosovo and here she is lying again. The centre of her present lies is to obscure that Saakashvili launched a genocidal attack on the capital of South Ossetia and that they committed genocide there.

As we said from the beginning the key to all of this and the answer to these lies is to bring forward into the light of day the nature of that Saakashvili attack. When that is understood then you see the pattern to previous atacks of NATO forces, such as especially the driving of Serbs from the Krajina in 1995.)

THE ATTACK ON THE SERBS AND THE ATTACK ON THE SOUTH OSSETIANS ARE CLOSELY LINKED

The attack by Georgia on South Ossetia is a major step by US, British and other Western Imperialism to make war on China and on Russia. The aim is not just control of oil, because oil will pass and there will be alternatives, but of power. Which class and which Imperialist bloc will win.

Everybody is involved in the outcome.

The attack by Saakashvili, who is a puppet of the US Power Machine, was in the dead of night and we fully expect that the report in Der Spiegel of this coming Monday will show that the purpose was total control of South Ossetia, and hence the obliteration of the Ossetian people.

As some intelligent observers noted, the parallel was not so much to Kosovo, but to the Krajina. The attack on the Krajina was also carried out by a combination of US power and a local ethnic Fascist entity, in that case led by Tudjman, and its purpose was to create an ethnically pure Fascist type state which is Croatia. That then becomes the centre of the US onslaught on then Yugoslavia.

Something very similar, but at an even more advanced and dangerous stage, has happened in Georgia attacking the South Ossetians.

It is to their eternal shame that Jewish leaders, such as we have seen with Ted Belman, editor of Israpundit, have lined up along with US Imperialism and with the Fascist Saakashvili in attacking South Ossetia.

Even worse Belman has not uttered a word about the destruction of the Jewish Quarter in the capital of South Ossetia, Tskhinvali, which all happened when darkness came and people including Jews were sleeping in their homes

There then followed days of terror when these poor people had to cower in the cellars of their homes. Nobody knows how many Jews have survived. Only one family out of 20 has been traced.

That Belman has not said a single word about this because he is a supporter of American Imperialism shows the enormous danger that the Jews of Israel are in.

To hide this horrible attack on these Jews of Tskhinvali, or to make little of it as another writer on his site did, is really a terrible crime against the Jewish people.

Deceiving the World with Pictures

This photo was first published by the Reuters as an image of a “dead woman being carried by the Georgian soldiers from the town of Gori”. But this “dead woman”, incredibly, is clutching the nurse’s arm.

This man exhibiting rage and grief happens to sit in the exact same place where the earlier picture was taken: the same pile of garbage is behind his back and scraps of metal from the picture of a “dead” woman being ‘rescued’ are lying around like in the earlier photo — plus some, additional, unidentified scraps of metal. What are these supposed to represent

Since when did a dead person when being carried hold on to the carrier!!!???

Now that is a mystery which only Reuters can tell us about.

I have looked extremely closely at these two photographs, and especially at the piece of scrap metal marked 1.

This scrap metal is precisely the same piece of scrap metal and it appears in both pictures. I have even looked at the serrated underside edge and you can see that this is precisely the same piece of metal.

So therefore what you have here are actors in operation and the scene brought to my mind so many things we have experienced over recent years. Here are some:

1. The El Dhurra France 2 image of the man and boy behind the barrel and the fakery of the boy Mohammed el Dhurra being killed by the Israelis. That was a fake, fake journalism and fake photography.

2. The Qana issue.

The narrative here is of how the combination of Hezbollah’s media management and modern photo-journalism has turned the recording of a tragic event into theatre, in the best tradition of Michael Moore.

In the use of staged photography this whole thing took the proverbial biscuit. Starring roles in pinning a massacre on the Israelis were take by Mr White tee shirt man and Mr Green Helmet man, here also sporting the orange glow jacket. These were actors who in the ruined building of Qana appeared here, there and everywhere. These actors were under the direction of Hizbullah and Palestinian and Arab photographers were performing on behalf of the Western Media outlets.

Pictures ‘show Georgia torching’

Image of Georgia destruction Satellite images have confirmed that ethnic Georgian villages inside South Ossetia have been deliberately burned, US-based Human Rights Watch says. It said analysis by UN experts showed the damage “was caused by intentional burning and not armed combat”. HRW researchers had “personally witnessed Ossetian militias looting and burning down ethnic Georgian villages”. The group said this was evidence of war crimes and urged Russia to prosecute those responsible.

 

And so it goes on. This reminds one of Madeleine Albright who claimed that the Serbs had committed a massacre in Srebrenica and showed satellite pictures of a mass grave. The pictures showed nothing of the kind and the US never allowed those pictures be examined by an independent authority much less than by those she was accusing of atrocity, the Serbs.

In this business of spreading lies he who gets in the first shot, of lying that is, is on the winning ticket.

“This should persuade the Russian government it needs to prosecute those responsible for these crimes.”

And so we move along and now the same thing is beginning to happen as happened following the retaking of Srebrenica by the Serbs in 1995.

1. Those who were there, especially the Dutch UN soldiers, were clear that no massacre of any kind took place

2. Yet the Media of the West gathering on Tuzla began to spread lies in the west that there was a horrible massacre

3. At the same time the authoritive Dutch Report working seriously at the same time was pinpointing these lying journalists, and affirming that no massacre happened

The interview by President Dmitry Medvedev to Russia Today affirms everything that we have been saying.

1. This issue is not to be seen as revenge for Kosovo. It is connected of course, but it must be understood on its own merits

2. Until recently Russia had been supporting the unity of Georgia and was not recognising these new independent states.

3. The attack by Saakashvil, by the American Government (not their ordinary people though), with aid from Israel has changed everything and the clock cannot be turned back.

Moreover the interview affirms what we said, that Russia appeared as the defenders and liberators of the ordinary people of Ossetia from Georgian Fascists like Saakashvili and the US Imperialists. This includes as liberators of the Jews who have had their lives ruined by the destruction of the Jewish Quarter. Get this, Russia has come forward as the defender of Jews against Saakashvili, against US Imperialism, against the EU Imperialists especially Britain, AND against Israel also involved in this attack.

As part of this the site is totally in support of Saakashvili and it has thus hidden the reality that the Georgian state machine aided by the US, and with some aid from Israel, launched the genocidal attack on Tskhinvali just after midnight as the 7th turned into the 8th of August.

In the course of this attack the Jewish Quarter was destroyed.

Since the very first minute we on 4international said that the Saaklashvili attack on Tskhinvali and South Ossetia represented the first real shot int he war of Imperialism against China and Russia.

This attack by Saakashvili also showed the limits of bourgeois nationalism. This was no ordinary Georgian nationalism, this was a Georgian “nationalism” captured by Soros and Imperialism and acting as a puppet for Imperialism.

Israpundit and other American and Canadian blogs have yet to cover the fact that the Jewish Quarter in Tskhinvali was destroyed by Saakashvili and his American Imperialist and believe it or not Israeli supporters. If this is confirmed, we will have grounds to suspect that somebody in the U.S. has created this conflict to aggravate the situation and create a competitive advantage for one of the presidential candidates”.

Reuters has produced a report in which they follow a man called Hammarberg (who is the Council of Europe Human Rights Commissioner whatever that may be!) around South Ossetia. They visited a village name of Khetagurova which is Ossetian surrounded by Georgian villages.

The report seems largely truthful and sticks to facts. This is not to be sneered at because Reuters has been found out to be creating fake photographs against the Ossetians and Russia. See

From this it would seem that the attack on South Ossetia by US and British Imperialist puppet Saakashvili was certainly a war crime. There is also an incident in which the Russians release two Georgian militia men who were involved in the attack and in doing so the Russians are in direct conflict with the Ossetians in this village, because the Georgians took 4 of their number prisoner, and they by that date were still prisoner. It must be remembered that over many years Russia had delayed recognizing the independence of Ossetia, until it was too late and the US puppet Saakashvili launched his genocidal attack.

Only one thing in this Reuters report, They refer to the Jewish Quarter as “so-called” Jewish Quarter. Why?

The great Russian conductor Valery Gergiev who works in London has travelled to Tskhinvali and given a concert among the ruins of that city. NATO lay behind Saakashvili in the attack just past midnight on 7 to 8 of August, an attack which has killed very many innocent civilians, including the complete destruction of the Jewish Quarter.

It is a great thing which Gergiev has done. The responses from the British public and presumably many music lovers is not half bad either.

The theme was Russia’s victory over Georgia; the spirit was Second World War defiance; the music was from Leningrad — and the conductor was from London.

Surrounded by soldiers and barbed wire, hundreds crowded into the centre of Tskhinvali to see Valery Gergiev conduct the Maryinsky Orchestra from St Petersburg as Russia staged a victory concert amid the ruins of the capital of South Ossetia.

From the mournful first bars of Shostakovitch’s Symphony No 7 (known as the Leningrad) in the makeshift arena, it was clear that the theme of the night was a stirring appeal to patriotism and the memories of Russian suffering during the Second World War.
